Bespoke structural design
Some of the most interesting work we do involves briefs where engineering and architecture have to think together from the start. Unusual geometries, exposed structural elements, feature staircases, glazed enclosures – these aren’t problems to be solved after the architectural concept is fixed. They’re design decisions, and structural input shapes what’s possible.
SCB Structures works closely with architects and clients on design-led projects where the structure is visible, load-bearing in unconventional ways, or simply too specific to be resolved with a standard approach.

get in touchWhat we do
We handle custom structural design for one-off projects, complex geometries and architectural feature structures, exposed structural elements and feature staircases, glazed elements and specialist structural details, and collaborative design development with architects from concept stage onward.
Getting involved early on bespoke work matters more than on conventional projects. The earlier we understand the architectural intent, the more options there are for resolving it structurally without compromise. Where constraints exist, we’d rather surface them at concept stage than after a scheme has developed around an assumption that turns out not to hold.
Our approach
get in touchOur role on bespoke projects is to enable the design rather than set its limits. This means understanding what an architect is trying to achieve before offering a structural opinion, staying involved as the design develops, and being straightforward about what’s achievable and what isn’t – including when a structural constraint is worth designing around rather than working against.
The projects in our bespoke portfolio vary considerably in scale and setting. What they have in common is that the structure and the architecture had to be resolved together.
